SDG Goal 2: Zero Hunger
Together against the greatest threat to humanity
SDG 2 is dedicated to ending hunger, achieving food security, and improving nutrition worldwide. This goal emphasizes the importance of ensuring that all people have access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to lead healthy and active lives.
How many people suffer from hunger?
It is estimated that more than 600 million people worldwide will be at risk of hunger by 2030, highlighting the immense challenge of achieving the goal of “Zero Hunger”. People suffering from moderate food insecurity are usually unable to eat a healthy and balanced diet on a regular basis due to income or other resource constraints.
Why are there so many hungry people?
Alarmingly, the world has returned to hunger levels not seen since 2005, and food prices remain higher in more countries than in 2015-2019. In addition to conflict, climate shocks and rising costs of living, civil insecurity and declining food production also contribute to food shortages and high food prices.
Investing in the agricultural sector is crucial to reduce hunger and poverty, improve food security, create jobs and strengthen resilience to disasters and shocks.

Goal 2: Zero Hunger

Major Focus Areas of SDG 2
Eradicating Hunger: Ending hunger involves ensuring that all people, especially the most vulnerable, have reliable access to sufficient and nutritious food. This requires enhancing food production systems, improving food distribution networks, and addressing the underlying causes of food insecurity, such as poverty and conflict.
Achieving Food Security: Food security means that all people have consistent access to adequate, safe, and nutritious food. Improving agricultural practices, investing in rural infrastructure, and supporting smallholder farmers are essential steps. By enhancing food production and distribution systems, we can ensure that food reaches those in need and reduce food insecurity.
Improving Nutrition: Nutrition is crucial for health and development. Efforts to improve nutrition include promoting diverse diets, fortifying foods with essential vitamins and minerals, and addressing malnutrition issues such as stunting and wasting. Public health initiatives and education campaigns play a key role in encouraging healthy eating habits and improving overall nutritional status.
Sustainable Agriculture: Sustainable agriculture practices are essential for long-term food security. This involves using resources efficiently, protecting soil and water, and minimizing the environmental impact of farming. By promoting sustainable agricultural techniques and technologies, we can increase food production while preserving natural ecosystems.
The Importance of Global and Local Action
Both global and local actions are crucial for achieving SDG 2. International cooperation, policy support, and funding are necessary to address large-scale hunger issues and build resilient food systems. Simultaneously, local initiatives, such as community-based agriculture projects and local food programs, play a vital role in addressing specific needs and improving food security at the grassroots level.
Why should I care?
We all want our families to have enough to eat, safe and nutritious food. A world without hunger can have a positive impact on our economy, health, education, equality and social development. It is a key building block for a better future for all people. Moreover, because hunger limits human development, we cannot achieve the other Sustainable Development Goals, such as education, health and gender equality.
How You Can Contribute
You can contribute to SDG 2 by supporting organizations working to end hunger, advocating for policies that promote food security, and making conscious choices that support sustainable agriculture. By raising awareness and taking action, you help create a world where everyone has access to nutritious food and the opportunity to thrive.
Transform Your Company with a Sustainability Challenge
Companies actively contribute to the fight against hunger. They reduce food waste, promote sustainable food practices, offer healthy options, and engage employees through initiatives like a “Corporate Community Challenge.” Externally, they advocate for policy changes, raise awareness, and collaborate with others. By using their voice, integrating hunger measures into CSR strategies, and fostering innovation, companies make a real difference. Consider organizing a corporate community challenge to involve employees actively in the cause.
