SDG Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy

Ensuring Access to Affordable and Clean Energy for All

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all by 2030. Energy is a critical component of sustainable development, influencing all aspects of life, including education, health, agriculture, and employment. Despite significant advancements, the world still faces substantial challenges in achieving universal energy access.

Current Challenges

The global energy landscape reveals stark disparities. Approximately 759 million people worldwide still lack access to electricity, with most of these individuals living in sub-Saharan Africa and rural areas of developing countries. Around 2.6 billion people rely on traditional biomass, coal, or kerosene for cooking, leading to severe health problems and environmental degradation. While the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix is growing, it still accounts for only 19.1% of the world’s total energy consumption. The global energy efficiency improvements need to accelerate significantly to meet the SDG 7 targets. Enhanced energy efficiency is crucial for reducing energy consumption and associated emissions.

Es gibt nur eins, was auf Dauer teurer ist als Bildung, keine Bildung.

What Do We Need to Do?

To realize SDG 7 by 2030, key actions are necessary. Substantial investments in energy infrastructure are required to expand access to electricity and clean cooking solutions. This includes funding for renewable energy projects and the development of decentralized energy systems, especially in remote and rural areas. Governments must implement robust policies and regulatory frameworks that support the deployment of renewable energy technologies and improve energy efficiency. These frameworks should encourage private sector participation and innovation. Advancing technology is crucial for achieving SDG 7, including improving the efficiency and affordability of renewable energy technologies, such as solar, wind, and hydropower, and developing energy storage solutions to enhance grid stability. Achieving universal energy access requires strong international cooperation and partnerships. Developed countries should support developing nations through financial aid, technology transfer, and capacity-building initiatives.

German Engagement for SDG 7

Germany actively contributes to SDG 7 implementation. Through various programs and projects, Germany supports countries in improving their energy access and promoting renewable energy. Special attention is given to sustainability and the protection of natural resources in developing countries to ensure their long-term availability. Initiatives like Green Citizens’ Energy and energy self-sufficient villages promote sustainable energy supply in rural regions. The Energising Development partnership has enabled 25.8 million people to access electricity or modern cooking energy by the end of 2021. The Global Energy Transformation program has connected 8.7 million people to sustainable energy, avoiding over 600,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

Let's power up our efforts and illuminate the path to universal energy access by 2030.

SDG 7 is not just a goal; it’s a lifeline for sustainable development and the well-being of people worldwide. Achieving universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy is essential for lifting communities out of poverty, improving health, and fostering economic growth. The path to SDG 7 requires a concerted global effort, with increased investment, groundbreaking technological innovation, and robust international collaboration.

Imagine a world where every home is lit, where clean cooking solutions prevent millions of deaths from indoor air pollution, and where renewable energy powers economies sustainably. This vision is within our reach, but we must act decisively. Despite significant advancements, substantial challenges remain. Over 675 million people still lack access to electricity, and 2.3 billion people depend on environmentally harmful cooking systems. Renewable energy only makes up 19.1% of global energy consumption, and energy efficiency improvements must accelerate significantly.

These figures are a clarion call for action. We must redouble our efforts to invest in energy infrastructure, foster innovation in renewable technologies, and strengthen international partnerships. By doing so, we can ensure that energy becomes a universal right, paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future for all. Let’s rise to the challenge and make SDG 7 a reality by 2030.

Together, we can light up the world.
