Perception Exercises for In-Between Moments

Content

Take a moment to pause and take a deep breath. When was the last time you consciously paid attention to what you can perceive with your senses? In this article, we introduce five small perception exercises to help sharpen your senses.

Our Senses: How We Experience the World

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, we often forget how important it is to consciously perceive our senses. Our five senses – sight (Visual), hearing (Auditory), smell (Olfactory), taste (Gustatory), and touch (Tactile) – form the basis of our perception and significantly influence how we experience the world around us. If one of these senses is impaired, the others are usually heightened. A blind person, for example, typically has a better-trained sense of hearing and can navigate better with their sense of touch than most sighted individuals. Our senses also help us to reconnect with the present moment in everyday life. With perception exercises, you can take a moment to pause and clear your mind. Below are five simple exercises to sharpen your senses and improve your perception.

5 Simple Exercises for Every Day

Visual Perception

Take a moment to observe your surroundings. How many different colors can you see right now? Count them in your mind. You can also count how many objects of a specific color you see. What shapes do you notice? Can you identify unusual shapes? Perhaps some shapes remind you of something else, like a vague face in the wall.

Auditory Perception

You can enhance your auditory perception with the following exercise. Go to a natural setting, such as your garden, a forest, by a river, or a park. Find a comfortable spot, like a bench. Tilt your head slightly backward and close your eyes. What sounds do you hear? How many different birds can you hear? Can you identify all the sounds?

Olfactory Perception

What can you smell right now? Where is the scent coming from? Do you associate specific memories with this scent? For this exercise, you can actively go to different environments to perceive various smells. Notice how the scents change as you move from one place to another.

Gustatory Perception

To improve your taste perception, you can perform this exercise during any meal. Before you start eating, close your eyes. Take a bite and chew slowly. Feel the texture, the taste. You can enhance this exercise by having someone else prepare the food for you, without knowing what you’ll be eating. Try to taste the food. You’ll be surprised that it’s not that easy to guess the food solely by taste, but with practice, you can improve.

Tactile Perception

When was the last time you walked barefoot? For this exercise, go to a grassy area or into the woods. Some fitness trails also have a barefoot course. Close your eyes and walk slowly. Try to land first with your heel and then with your toes, pressing your foot fully into the ground. Feel the surface, how it changes, how it yields under your weight, whether it’s warm or cold, soft or hard.
