Triple fit with triathlon

Inhalt

The triathlon is a sporting competition that combines three endurance sports: Swimming, cycling and running. Since 2000, the triathlon is also an integral part of the Olympic Games and is also becoming increasingly popular among amateur athletes.

In the following article, you will learn about the advantages of triathlon and receive valuable tips on how you can get started with this varied sport. In addition, you will find exciting information about the history of triathlon, the course, the disciplines and the world record holders.

History

The origins of the triathlon date back to the 1920s. The first reports of multiple competitions with swimming, cycling and running were from France. However, the name of the triathlon was used for the first time only in 1970. Here, the first triathlon was organized and conducted by Americans Jack Johnstone and Don Shanahan. Over the years, various regulations developed and the era of triathlon was created.

Disciplines & Sequence

Each triathlon always follows the same sequence: Swim, Bike, Run.

  • Swimming – At the beginning the participants have to swim. This usually takes place in a lake, sea or river.
  • Biking – After that follows the cycling. Here, the participants’ bikes are ready after the transition area, so they can get right on and start cycling. Cycling takes most of the time in the triathlon due to the length of the course.
  • Running – Last comes the running. With this discipline, the athlete completes the competition and crosses the finish line.

For a triathlon, a lot of endurance and good power management are of great importance. The athletes have to manage their strength well in order to last until the end.

Distances

A triathlon is differentiated according to the kilometers of the respective disciplines.

Popular distance

This triathlon is particularly suitable for beginners.  It is also known as a “taster triathlon”.  Here the distances per discipline are relatively “short”.

  • Swimming: 400 to 750 meters

  • Cycling: 20 kilometers

  • Running: 2.5 to 5 kilometers

Olympic distance

The triathlon is an integral part of the Olympic Games. Athletes have to complete the following distances:

  • Swimming: 1.5 kilometers

  • Cycling: 40 kilometers

  • Running: 10 kilometers

Middle distance

The middle distance is often referred to as “Ironman 70.3”, as the total distance in miles is around 70.3. Here the athletes swim about 1.9 kilometers, cycle 90 kilometers and run 21.1 kilometers (a half marathon).

Langdistanz

The distances to be covered here are significantly longer:

  • Swimming: 1-4 kilometers

  • Cycling: 100-120 kilometers

  • Running: 10-42 kilometers

Ironman

The Ironman is the supreme discipline of the long distance and presents athletes with one of the toughest challenges in endurance sports:

  • Swimming: 3.8 kilometers

  • Cycling: 180 kilometers

  • Running: 42.2 kilometers (a marathon)

World record holder

In Ironman, Norwegian Kristian Blummenfelt holds the men’s world record with 7:21:12 hours. In the women’s race, Laura Philipp of Germany holds the world record with 8:18:20 hours.

Ethics in triathlon - fairness and anti-doping

Triathlon is not only a physical challenge, but also a competition based on fairness and integrity. That is why the fight against doping is a central part of the sport. Triathlon federations worldwide enforce strict rules and testing to ensure that all athletes compete on a level playing field and perform honestly.

Doping has no place in triathlon. Athletes must undergo regular doping tests, which can be carried out both during and after competitions. These measures ensure that sporting performance is based on the principles of fairness and ambition and is not impaired by unauthorized substances. The anti-doping regulations not only protect athletes from health risks, but also promote the credibility of sport. They ensure that competition remains fair and transparent. Everyone who takes part in triathlon must be aware of the responsibility that comes with taking part in a competition.

Advantages of triathlon

Triathlon has many benefits for body and mind: in addition to physical fitness, the mental aspect plays an important role. This type of training can help to reduce stress, as regular exercise has been proven to increase well-being and clear the mind. The various disciplines also train your ability to concentrate and mental strength – skills that are also beneficial in everyday and professional life:

  1. Variety in training: The combination of the three disciplines addresses different muscle groups, which makes the training varied.

  2. Experience nature: The competitions often take place outdoors, so you can discover new landscapes.

  3. Community: You can train with others and take part in competitions, which increases the fun factor.

  4. Challenge: The three demanding disciplines promote your physical fitness and help you to get to know your limits better.

  5. Alternative to individual sports: A great opportunity to try out different sports and not just focus on one.

  6. Personal growth: The experience you gain in competition can help you to grow in other areas of your life too.

Tips on how you can get started with triathlon

If you want to start triathlon, here are some helpful tips:

    • Regular training sessions: Start with short sessions in each discipline. This will keep your training varied and your body will get used to the different demands.

    • Set yourself small goals: Start with short distances and increase when you feel ready to take part in competitions.

    • Train together: Join a sports club or train with friends. This promotes team spirit and makes training more fun.

    • Swimming training: The swimming discipline can be technically demanding. It can be helpful to take some training lessons, either in groups or individually. For beginners, it is recommended to swim once or twice a week to improve technique and build up fitness. Good swimming goggles and a well-fitting wetsuit (if swimming in open water) are essential equipment.

The triathlon offers an exciting and challenging opportunity to improve your fitness and gain new experiences. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced athlete, this versatile competition has something for everyone.
