Playing sports with other people and pursuing the same goals is not only fun, but also incredibly motivating. There are numerous team sports around the world, as sports in groups is popular everywhere. Here, we present 4 popular sports where the combined strength of the team is essential.
Basketball
Basketball was invented in Canada in 1891 and became an Olympic discipline for men in 1936 and for women in 1976 after rapidly spreading worldwide. Two teams with 5 players each play on the court, dribbling, passing and shooting to try and score the ball in the 3.05 meter high hoop. The game is divided into 4 quarters of 10 minutes, and 12 minutes in the NBA (National Basketball Association in North America). The team with the most points from scoring baskets wins the game. Basketball is now widely spread in Germany too, with several clubs where one can join the sport.
Ice hockey
Ice hockey is especially popular in North America and Canada. This fast sport evolved over many years through various influences and predecessor sports, with the first dated game taking place in Montreal in 1875. The goal is to move the puck (a flat hard rubber disk) into the opposing team’s net using hockey sticks. There are 5 players on the ice and one person in the goal. Ice hockey is a contact sport and moves quite quickly. A total of three 20-minute periods are played on the 60×30 meter ice surface. The most important thing in ice hockey is the right equipment. In addition to neck, shoulder, chest, shin and knee pads, don’t forget a helmet with a plexiglass or mesh visor to protect yourself from injury.
Rudern
Rowing is a strength-endurance sport in which a narrow long boat is propelled over water. Rowing was already practiced in ancient times and was established in Britain in the 18th century, mainly in educational institutions such as universities. Two different types of rowing can be distinguished. On the one hand, there is sculling, in which a skull (oar) is held in each hand. On the other hand, in sweep rowing, a single oar is held in both hands of the athletes. Rowing has been an Olympic sport since 1990 and between one and nine people can be found in the boat, with the aim of covering a distance as quickly as possible.
Volleyball
Originally from the United States, where the first games were played at the end of the 19th century, volleyball has been represented at the Olympic Games since 1964 and enjoys worldwide popularity. Six players per team stand on one half of the 18×9 m playing field, which is separated by a net. Once the ball is in play after the serve, there can be a maximum of three touches by a team before the ball is hit back to the opponent’s court. If the ball touches the ground on the opponent’s court, a point is awarded. In addition, there are various faults, such as a double touch by the same person, which results in a point for the opponents. A maximum of five sets are played. If a team reaches 25 points, they win a set. There is no time limit
